PSG’s Enrique Frustrated After Shock Defeat to Botafogo

PSG’s Enrique go: “We Need Be Better”

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) manager Luis Enrique has voiced his frustration following his team’s 1-0 loss to Brazilian side Botafogo in Group B of the FIFA Club World Cup on Friday morning. The French champions, who entered the tournament as one of the favourites after a historic treble-winning season, fell short after a 36th-minute strike by Igor Jesus. The Copa Libertadores titleholders now sit at the top of the group, on the verge of qualification to the knockout stage.
PSG are one of the favourites for the revamped FIFA Club World Cup after a Treble-winning campaign which culminated with a scintillating 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final. But their hopes of securing a victory which would have seen them become the first side into the round of 16 were dashed by a resilient performance from Rio de Janeiro-based Botafogo. “Obviously we are frustrated with the result,” Enrique told PSG website. “It was a very tight game, Botafogo defended very well, like almost no team in Ligue 1 or the Champions League. “It was a tough game from start to finish, and that’s normal. Playing against us is an extra source of motivation for our opponents.

PSG Miss Early Knockout Qualification Opportunity

A win against Botafogo would have guaranteed PSG a place in the round of 16, potentially making them the first team to progress. But the Rio de Janeiro club’s compact defensive display frustrated the Parisians, ending their momentum after an emphatic 5-0 Champions League final win over Inter Milan just weeks ago.

Enrique: “Botafogo Defended Better Than Most European Teams”

Speaking to the club’s official media, Luis Enrique didn’t hold back: “Obviously we are frustrated with the result. It was a very tight game. Botafogo defended very well — better than almost any team we’ve faced in Ligue 1 or the Champions League.” Enrique acknowledged the mental and physical intensity of the game, highlighting how teams often raise their level when facing PSG. “These matches are always tough. Our opponents are always extra motivated. But we must improve. That has been our focus all week.”

Warren Zaire-Emery: “We Had the Ball, But Didn’t Convert”

Midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery also reacted after the match, suggesting PSG had the upper hand despite the result. “It was a very tough game against a good Brazilian team. They were intense and physical. We dominated possession and created a lot of chances, but we didn’t take them.” Zaire-Emery stressed that the team must sharpen their efficiency in front of goal. “We always give everything and follow the coach’s plan. It’s not over yet. We’ve got one more game, and we have to win it to go through.”

Looking Ahead: PSG Face Must-Win Match

PSG will face Seattle Sounders in their final Group B match on Monday, June 23. With three points on the table, victory is essential to secure a spot in the next round of the tournament.
